In the communication war between him and President Biden, Elon Musk has decided not to let anything pass. Once again, the CEO of Tesla corrects an assertion by the American president, who knowingly omits to mention his brand when addressing the subject of the electric automobile industry.
Elon Musk opposes more and more openly the current president of the United States of America. The verbal contest is not recent, but it has intensified in recent weeks as Joe Biden knowingly excludes Tesla from his announcements. When it comes to the automotive industry and the development of electric cars, the president only mentions the efforts of Ford and GM. Behavior that annoys the CEO of Tesla, who no longer hesitates to challenge the media and respond publicly on Twitter to President Biden.
In his first State of the Union address, President Biden of course addressed the conflict in Ukraine, but other announcements were also on the agenda. The president notably encouraged the investments launched by Ford and GM for the electrification of their ranges. He wanted to congratulate them for boosting the automotive sector of tomorrow with the construction of factories on American territory, and thus for promoting employment.
A numbered battle
Joe Biden insisted on the positive impact of the transformations of GM and Ford, citing several figures during his speech. Figures that can also be found in a tweet published by its communication teams:
” Ford is investing $11 billion to build electric vehicles, creating 11,000 jobs nationwide.
GM makes biggest investment in history – $7 billion to build electric vehicles, creating 4,000 jobs in Michigan. »
It was enough for Elon Musk to react on Twitter and with media like CNBC to complete President Biden’s announcements: ” Tesla has created more than 50,000 jobs in the United States building electric vehicles and is investing more than twice as much as GM and Ford combined. »
If political differences exist between the two men, it is still surprising to observe the situation worsen from week to week. If GM or Ford historically dominate the American automobile market, Tesla dominates the electric vehicle market with more than 302,000 sales made in 2021 in the USA. GM, for example, only produced around twenty electric vehicles in the last quarter of 2021.
Tesla has created over 50,000 jobs in the US (over 110,000 globally), has two Megafactories in Freemont and Austin to produce “Made in USA” vehicles. In 2021, Tesla now exceeds 2% market share in the American automotive industry. It is also more than a million Tesla vehicles that have been marketed on American soil since its launch.
A tense situation
Joe Biden’s exacerbated protectionism towards certain companies does not only annoy Elon Musk for Tesla. Many manufacturers also reacted when the president announced a “super bonus” for the acquisition of an electric vehicle. The initiative could have been applauded by all, except that obtaining the maximum bonus is subject to rather surprising criteria.
This super bonus, for the acquisition of an electric vehicle, is only reserved for makes and models from American factories with unionized workers. Chance does things well since GM or Ford fit precisely into this somewhat specific framework.
On the other hand, brands like Tesla do have American factories, but since their workers are not unionized, Tesla buyers can only benefit from a partial bonus. Foreign brands, with factories in North America, are generally excluded from the scheme for the same reasons.
It is not these bonus quarrels that will stop Tesla, on the other hand, this does not help to calm the dialogue between the two personalities.
Too out of control for a meeting with the president?
While the American president has visited the factories of Ford and GM, and received several times the representatives of the two brands, Elon Musk is once again dismissed, or rather knowingly ignored.
A ludicrous situation that does not seem ready to stop, if we are to believe the indiscretions of the president’s entourage published in the US media. We are therefore not immune to witnessing new clashes between the two men, spread out in public on the media and social networks.
