The list never ends. Many food products, contaminated with bacteria, were recalled by their manufacturers this week in France. After Buitoni’s contaminated pizzas, bread, cheeses and Kinder chocolates, it is now the turn of smoked raw hams from Alsace to be recalled after the detection of the presence of salmonella.

The government site dedicated to product recalls, Rappel Conso, indicates that the recalled product is the “Hammon cru fumé d’Alsace supérieur demi” of the Maurer brand marketed between March 30 and April 7, 2022 throughout France. It had been distributed by the Cooperative U in Mulhouse and by Colruyt in the Jura, as well as by the Boucherie de la source in Lozère and at Vents d’Est Anatol in Haute-Garonne.

As a reminder, ingested by the body, this salmonella causes what is called “salmonellosis”: “It is an acute gastroenteritis.” describes Professor Éric Oswald, Professor of Bacteriology and Deputy Director of the INSERM Digestive Health Research Institute, who indicates that it is above all the most fragile populations, such as the immunocompromised or children, who are more susceptible to these bacteria.

Symptoms related to salmonella contamination appear only a few days after consuming contaminated food: diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, digestive tract disorders, abdominal pain, fever… “It remains violent”, comments the professor, even if the majority of the symptoms remain relatively benign. “The associated dehydration can become serious and life-threatening,” details the World Health Organization.
